Cavities can happen to anyone whether it's kids
or adults. Even daily brushing, flossing, and best oral hygiene habits cannot
completely prevent it. Genetics and age factors may also be the reason for
cavities or decayed teeth. Cavities caused by tooth decay are so common that
people may not take them seriously. However, it can lead to long-lasting and
serious complications if left untreated.
If you are suffering from a cavity, you need to visit
a doctor and get it checked without any delay.
To get rid of your decayed tooth, your dentists might want you to get
your fillings done. But before getting your aesthetic fillings
done, you should be aware of the types of fillings, their purpose, and their
suitability to choose the most appropriate solution for you.
Various Material available for fillings/ Types of
Dental Fillings
- Silver Fillings (Amalgam Fillings)- Silver fillings are made from a combination of different metals
including silver, copper, tin, and mercury. It is a less costly and quicker
procedure as compared to tooth coloured fillings. This filling can
potentially last up to 12 to 15 years and usually lasts longer than tooth
coloured fillings.
Mostly suitable for molars and teeth which
undergo a lot of pressure or force. However, silver fillings are often
considered less attractive due to poor aesthetics. Amalgam fillings can
discolor or turn gray after some time.
- Gold Fillings- As the name
suggests, gold fillings are a combination of 75% Gold and 25% other minor
metals. These gold crowns are ideal for those having extensive biting,
grinding, chewing, and wear patterns. Being a highly durable metal, gold
fillings do not chip or break easily and last for decades. Made from
high-quality material, there are no chances of it being oxidized,
discolored, or turning black.
Highly suitable for protecting severely decayed
teeth or providing full coverage after root canal treatment. However, gold
fillings are more expensive than aesthetic fillings thereby, resulting in a
rise in the overall cost of dental restoration.
- Ceramic Fillings- Made
from high-quality porcelain, these fillings are aesthetically attractive
and durable. Ceramic fillings are more resistant to staining and abrasion
as compared to tooth coloured fillings. The only disadvantage of choosing
ceramic over aesthetic fillings is that it is expensive and more brittle
so it needs extra care or prevention from breaking.
- Composite or Tooth coloured Fillings- Tooth coloured fillings is one of the most preferred choices as
it matches the exact color or shade of your original teeth, unlike silver
or gold fillings. Made from a combination of silica fillers and plastic
resins, these fillings possess many qualities of natural tooth structure.
Your dentist might suggest tooth coloured
fillings if the size of the cavity is small to medium. Also, it is ideal for
people who are image-conscious and afraid of dental work as it requires less
drilling and bonds completely to the original tooth structure. A negative point
about aesthetic fillings is that they may not last as long as silver fillings
under the pressure of chewing and are not suitable for treating large cavities.
Treating the cavity involves removing the decayed
portion of teeth & then filling that portion with some material. Today
there are so many options available for dental filling material. As we have discussed above, teeth can be
filled with gold, porcelain, tooth colored fillings
including plastic and other materials called composite resin fillings, silver
amalgam (consisting of mercury mixed with silver, zinc, tin, and copper), and
more.
